Advanced monitoring and rapid handling are helping reduce waste and improve
quality across Europe’s supply chain
Maastricht, Netherlands, 25 March 2026 – In the world of perishable goods, time plays a critical role. Even small delays can impact product quality, especially for sensitive items like flowers. Recognizing this, Maastricht Aachen Airport has taken a major step forward by investing in advanced monitoring technology to improve how delicate cargo is handled.
In 2025, the airport introduced a system that tracks temperature and handling conditions in real time. Based on around 5,000 temperature measurements, the results show that the airport is among the most efficient in Europe when it comes to handling perishable goods.
One of the biggest advantages is speed. Maastricht Aachen Airport maintains handling times between 2 to 4 hours, even during peak periods. This is significantly faster compared to other European cargo airports, where handling can take between 7 to 10 hours. Faster processing means goods spend less time exposed to temperature changes, helping preserve their quality.
For products like flowers, this makes a major difference. Every minute outside controlled conditions can shorten shelf life and reduce value. By minimizing delays, the airport helps ensure that flowers and other sensitive goods reach their destination in better condition.
Location also plays an important role. With direct access to major motorways, the airport enables quick transportation beyond its terminals. As a result, about 80 percent of flower shipments reach the Aalsmeer auction on the same day before closing time. This shortens the logistics chain, reduces waste, and improves freshness for end consumers.
Consistency is another key strength. The airport is not only fast but also reliable in maintaining stable handling times. This predictability is crucial for businesses that depend on time-sensitive deliveries and need assurance that their goods will arrive on schedule.
The use of advanced monitoring technology allows the airport to track conditions in real time, identify inefficiencies, and continuously improve operations. It also supports better decision- making across the supply chain, helping reduce losses and enhance overall performance.
With its combination of speed, technology, and strategic location, Maastricht Aachen Airport is positioning itself as a strong alternative to larger cargo hubs. Its ability to handle sensitive cargo efficiently makes it an important gateway for perishable logistics in Europe.
As demand for fresh and high-quality products continues to grow, solutions that improve speed and reliability will become increasingly important. Maastricht Aachen Airport’s approach shows how innovation in logistics can create real value, not just for businesses, but for consumers as well.
