The aerospace company estimates demand for up to 16,000 hybrid electric aircraft as shorter, point-to-point journeys create new possibilities for regional aviation
Manassas, Virginia, 16 September 2026 – Regional travel in the United States can be challenging when communities lack convenient air connections. Many journeys between 50 and 250 miles are still completed by car because traditional airlines often depend on large airports and hub connections. Electra believes hybrid electric aircraft could provide another option by bringing direct air travel closer to passengers.
The Virginia-based aerospace company’s Direct Aviation Market Outlook estimates potential demand for between 12,000 and 16,000 hybrid electric aircraft in the United States between 2030 and 2040. The estimate is based on Electra’s analysis of regional transportation demand and thousands of potential routes. It represents the company’s market projection rather than confirmed industry demand.
Electra describes Direct Aviation as a more distributed approach to regional transportation. Instead of requiring travelers to drive to a major airport and connect through a hub, smaller aircraft could operate from locations closer to communities. This could create direct connections between smaller cities, towns, business centers, and major transportation hubs.
At the center of the concept is Electra’s EL9 Ultra Short, a nine-passenger hybrid electric aircraft. The aircraft uses hybrid electric propulsion and blown lift technology, allowing it to take off and land in approximately 150 feet. This capability could make smaller airports and other suitable access points practical for regional flights.
The EL9 is being designed for regional missions, with Electra targeting a range of up to 1,100 nautical miles and a cruise speed of up to 175 knots. Its hybrid electric architecture is intended to support efficient regional operations while reducing aircraft noise during takeoff and landing.
Electra’s market analysis identifies more than 6,000 potential routes where Direct Aviation could provide an alternative to existing transportation. The company estimates that more than 1,800 routes could potentially save travelers at least one hour compared with current travel options. These figures are projections based on the company’s analysis and are not guarantees of future travel times.
The aircraft’s propulsion technology is also moving forward. Electra and Safran Helicopter Engines have agreed to develop and produce the TG600 turbogenerator for the EL9. The system is designed to provide electrical power for the aircraft’s hybrid electric propulsion architecture.
Electra is also advancing the aircraft through the certification process. The company has been working with the Federal Aviation Administration on the EL9’s certification basis, an important step toward eventual commercial operation. The company expects the aircraft to enter service around 2030, subject to development and certification progress.
However, building a new regional aviation network will require more than aircraft. Infrastructure, safety certification, operating economics, maintenance, passenger demand, and suitable landing locations will all influence whether Direct Aviation can become commercially successful.
Electra’s vision reflects a broader effort across the aerospace industry to develop new forms of regional air mobility. Hybrid electric aircraft could potentially connect communities that currently depend heavily on road transportation while creating more flexible alternatives to traditional hub-based aviation.
If the EL9 reaches commercial service as planned, it could demonstrate how short takeoff capability and hybrid electric propulsion can work together to create a more connected regional aviation network.
