New scheduled flights from June 2026 will add faster, reliable cargo capacity for perishables, pharmaceuticals, and express shipments through Muscat.
Muscat, Oman, 13 January 2026 – Oman Air Cargo has announced a major network expansion with the launch of a new Muscat to Kigali service, marking the airline’s official entry into Rwanda. This move strengthens the carrier’s growing footprint in East Africa and supports its wider plan to build smoother cargo connections between African exporters and key global markets.
The Muscat Kigali service is expected to operate using B-737 passenger aircraft starting from June 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. While the aircraft will carry passengers, the flights will also provide important bellyhold cargo capacity, helping businesses move time-sensitive goods more efficiently between East Africa and international destinations.
A New Gateway for East Africa’s Perishables and Time-Sensitive Cargo
The new route will support the shipment of high-demand goods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, pharmaceuticals, general cargo, and express deliveries originating in East Africa. These products often need fast and temperature-controlled transport, especially when being exported to markets far from the region.
With this route, exporters will have access to scheduled cargo capacity rather than depending heavily on charter flights. This is expected to make planning easier for businesses and improve reliability for customers who require consistent delivery timelines.
“We are seeing sustained growth in demand between the Middle East and Africa, particularly for perishables and specialist cargo, and this new route allows us to respond with additional capacity and reach,” said Michael Duggan, Head of Cargo, Oman Air.
Muscat Strengthens Its Role as a Cargo Hub
A key part of this expansion is Muscat’s growing position as a cargo transit hub. Cargo arriving from Kigali will be routed through Muscat and connected onward to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, and the Indian subcontinent.
Oman Air Cargo is positioning Muscat as a dependable consolidation point where goods from Africa can be processed, stored, and moved quickly to multiple international markets. This is especially helpful for exporters who want better access to global supply chains without unnecessary delays.
The airline also highlighted that it is focused on offering exporters a stronger and more dependable logistics option.
“By expanding our network into East Africa, we are providing exporters with reliable access to our global network and strengthening Muscat’s position as a dependable cargo hub,” Duggan added.
Fleet and Facilities Designed for Fresh and Pharma Cargo
Oman Air Cargo operates aircraft, including the B-737-MAX and B-787-9, supporting both regional and long-haul cargo movements. The carrier also backs its operations with a warehouse infrastructure in Muscat built to handle sensitive shipments.
The Muscat cargo facility is certified for fresh and pharmaceutical cargo and includes temperature-controlled storage systems designed for perishables and medical products. This ensures that goods like flowers, produce, and medicines can stay protected and stable during transit.
A Smart Step for Regional Trade Growth
With East Africa continuing to grow as a supplier of high-quality perishables and specialist products, the Muscat–Kigali route is expected to create faster trade movement and stronger connectivity. For exporters, it offers more dependable shipping schedules. For global buyers, it supports better access to fresh goods with improved speed and handling.
